How to Use This Guide

This guide is for anyone whose bed is not working: the mattress, the temperature, or what is on top of it. Start with the mattress if yours is the problem. If you like your mattress, the other three categories change the surface you lie on and how warm or cool it runs. Use Choose by Goal and Choose by Space to find your category, read that section, then send its Ask the Seller questions to anyone you are considering. Everything here is about evaluating equipment. None of it is medical advice.

Choose by Goal

Your GoalWhat FitsWhy
My Mattress Sags, or It Is More Than Ten Years OldA new mattress, hybrid or latexA topper cannot fix a mattress that no longer supports you. The core has to change.
I Like My Mattress But It Is Too FirmA topper, two to four inchesWool or latex over a firm mattress changes the surface without replacing the core.
I Sleep Hot, Even with the AC onA sleep system that cools, single or dual zoneIt removes heat from the bed itself, which is where a heat-trapping mattress holds it.
My Partner and I Want Different TemperaturesA dual-zone sleep systemEach half of the bed has its own control, so neither sleeper has to compromise.
My Partner and I Want Different FeelsA mattress with a split feel, or two twin XLsNest builds one mattress with a different feel on each side. Two twin XLs do it on any base.
I Want Natural Materials, No FoamA latex mattress, wool and latex toppers, wool beddingSoaring Heart and Holy Lamb build with organic wool, cotton and latex, certified to GOTS or GOLS.
I Need a Bed for a Guest Room or a Small SpaceA futon or a shikibutonBoth fold and store. A shikibuton is four inches thick and goes on tatami or slats.
My Pillow Goes Flat, or I Sleep on My SideA pillow matched to your position and loftSide sleepers need a high, firm loft. Back and stomach sleepers need a lower one.

What to Look For

01Mattresses

Category 01

Mattresses

A hybrid mattress pairs individually wrapped coils with comfort layers of foam or latex on top. A latex mattress is a single slab of Dunlop latex wrapped in wool and cotton, with no coils and no foam. Futons and shikibutons are the floor-bed versions: layers of cotton, wool and sometimes latex, hand-tufted into a four-to-seven-inch mattress that folds.

What Matters Most
  1. 01Feel, Chosen by Position — Side sleepers usually want plush or medium. Back and stomach sleepers usually want medium or firm. The three mattresses we carry cover plush through extra firm.
  2. 02The Base It Needs — Latex needs a slatted frame off the floor so air moves under it. Hybrids take a platform, slats or a box spring. Check the maker's base rule before you buy; it is tied to the warranty.
  3. 03Weight and Delivery — A queen latex mattress weighs about 95 pounds and does not come in a box. Hybrids are lighter but still bulky. Know who carries it upstairs before it ships, and whether delivery is to the door.
The Common Mistake

Reading the warranty as one number. Soaring Heart's is 20 years, but only the first ten are non-prorated, and it requires a slatted base, a natural mattress protector and regular flipping. Skip the protector and the coverage ends. Every mattress warranty has conditions like these.

Ask the Seller
  1. Which feel do you recommend for my sleeping position and weight, and can two sides differ?
  2. What base does the warranty require, and what is the slat spacing?
  3. How much does it weigh, how does it ship, and who brings it inside?
  4. How long is the trial, what does a return cost, and is the trial the maker's or yours?
  5. Which years of the warranty are non-prorated, and what voids it?

02Sleep Systems
Temperature-controlled sleep pad on a bed
Category 02

Sleep Systems

A quilted pad or thin layer that lies on your mattress, connected by hose to a bedside control unit that circulates chilled or warmed water through tubing in the pad. The bed changes temperature. The room does not. Nothing is replaced or installed.

What Matters Most
  1. 01Temperature Range, Both Ends — The low end decides how well it cools. The top decides whether it heats at all. The systems we carry run from 55°F to 115°F or 118°F.
  2. 02Zones — Two sleepers who disagree need two independently controlled halves, not one setting for the whole bed.
  3. 03Noise at the Bedside — Ask for a decibel figure. The control unit runs next to your head all night. Perfect Sleep Pad publishes 40 dBA; ask for the others.
The Common Mistake

Treating the warranty as one number. The control unit and the pad can be covered separately, and the pad, the part you lie on every night, can carry a much shorter term. On one system we carry, it is two years for the unit and 90 days for the pad.

Ask the Seller
  1. What is the full temperature range, and does the system heat as well as cool?
  2. How loud is the control unit, in decibels, and at what setting was that measured?
  3. Are the control unit and the pad warrantied separately, and for how long each?
  4. Does the maker's sleep trial apply when I buy from you, and who pays return shipping?
  5. Does it fit my mattress height and my adjustable base, and does it need a protector?

03Toppers and Protectors
Wool mattress topper laid on a bed
Category 03

Toppers and Protectors

A topper is a two-to-six-inch layer of wool, latex or fleece that lies on top of the mattress and under the sheets, changing how the surface feels. A protector is a washable cotton pad that lies between the mattress and the sheets and takes the moisture and spills a mattress cannot be cleaned of.

What Matters Most
  1. 01Material, Then Thickness — Wool is soft and breathes. Latex is springy and holds its shape. Fleece is a thin, warm surface. Two inches softens a firm bed; four or more changes it.
  2. 02Flipping and Settling — Wool batting settles with use. Every wool topper we carry asks to be flipped, from every other week to every few months, so it wears evenly and keeps its loft.
  3. 03What the Mattress Warranty Says — Soaring Heart's 20-year warranty requires a natural protector. A protector is the cheapest part of the bed and the first thing a claim asks about.
The Common Mistake

Buying a topper to rescue a mattress that has failed. A topper changes the surface of a mattress that still supports you. On a sagging core it follows the sag.

Ask the Seller
  1. What is it filled with, and how thick is it when new and after a year?
  2. How often does it need flipping, and can it be washed or only spot cleaned?
  3. Does it need a protector over it, and does the mattress warranty require one?
  4. What is the return policy on an opened topper?
  5. How long before it ships, if it is made to order?

04Pillows and Bedding
Wool comforter turned back on a made bed
Category 04

Pillows and Bedding

Pillows filled with wool, kapok, latex, buckwheat hulls or alpaca, in lofts for side, back and stomach sleepers, plus body, neck and travel shapes. Comforters filled with wool, alpaca or cotton in three weights, and the cases and encasements that go with them.

What Matters Most
  1. 01Fill and Loft by Position — Side sleepers need a high, firm pillow that fills the gap between shoulder and head. Back and stomach sleepers need a lower loft. Kapok and buckwheat fills adjust through a zipper.
  2. 02Washing — Wool and cotton batting pillows are spot clean only. Wool bolus and shredded latex can go in a machine. Wool comforters soak and spin, never agitate. Read the care line before you buy.
  3. 03Comforter Weight — Three weights, from about 2.6 to 8 pounds of wool in a twin. Match the weight to your climate and to whether you run warm or cool, and check the wool weight for your size on the product page.
The Common Mistake

Assuming bedding comes with a trial. It does not. Pillows and comforters are personal items; the makers we carry take back only unused, unopened items, with a restocking fee.

Ask the Seller
  1. What is the fill, and what is the loft for a side sleeper against a back sleeper?
  2. Can it be washed, and how?
  3. What is the comforter's wool weight in my size, and which weight suits my climate?
  4. What are the return terms on an opened pillow or comforter?
  5. How long before it ships, if it is made to order?

Checklist

Before You Buy

  • Measure your mattress and your bed frame, and note the slat spacing if the frame has slats.
  • Decide what changes first: the mattress, the temperature, or the surface.
  • Check the base rule in the mattress warranty before choosing a frame.
  • For a sleep system, find an outlet and a flat spot within hose reach on each sleeper's side.
  • Read every warranty by component: core and cover, control unit and pad, topper and protector.
  • Confirm the trial, the day it starts, and what a return costs you. Bedding usually has none.
  • Plan for the lead time. Handmade bedding takes one to five weeks to ship.
Common Questions

Asked Before Buying

Hybrid or Latex?

A hybrid has coils under foam or latex comfort layers and feels responsive. A latex mattress is one dense slab with no coils and feels supportive and slightly springy. Latex is heavier and needs a slatted base. Decide which you prefer, then compare feel, trial and warranty within that type.

Does the Trial Apply When I Buy Here?

Not always. Some makers' sleep trials, like Sleepme's 30 nights and Soaring Heart's 30-day comfort exchange, apply only to purchases made directly from them. Our return policy covers you instead: 30 days, unused, with a restocking fee. The product page says which applies.

Will a Sleep System Cool My Bedroom?

No. It changes the temperature of the bed surface, not the air, which is also why it draws far less power than air conditioning. If the room itself is uncomfortable, a sleep system does not replace climate control.

Can I Put a Topper on an Adjustable Base?

Yes, with a mattress that bends with the base. Toppers of two to three inches follow the mattress. A thick wool topper on a base at full incline may shift, so check the maker's guidance.

What Does &Quot;organic" Mean on a Mattress?

It means a third party certified the materials: GOTS for cotton and wool, GOLS for latex. The product page names the certification for each layer. A maker that says "natural" without a certificate is making a different claim.

How Long Before I Know Whether It Works for Me?

Longer than a night or two. Mattresses, toppers and sleep systems all take a few weeks to settle in, and to settle on a temperature. Make sure the trial period, if there is one, is long enough to get past that.
